White loses on Brumbies return
The Brumbies got one over on former coach Jake White as they beat Super Rugby leaders the Sharks 16-9 in Canberra.
White was in charge of the Brumbies last season as they claimed a 29-10 win in Durban, but was on the losing side this time around as the side from the capital held on to top spot in the Australian Conference.
Sam Carter scored the only try of the match for the Brumbies, with Christian Lealiifano kicking the rest of their points, while Frans Steyn booted three penalties for the Sharks.
Lealiifano booted the home side into a second-minute lead and Steyn missed two chances to level things up before eventually nailing his third kick of the contest.
The Brumbies restored their lead from the kicking tee before Lealiifano missed an opportunity to extend the advantage on the stroke of half-time.
It was an attritional opening half, with the rain limiting both teams to a kicking game, and boot continued to dominate as Lealiifano and Steyn exchanged further penalties shortly after the interval.
Lealiifano hit a post with two further penalty attempts before the Brumbies had their try as Carter ran on to a Nic White pass and crashed over.
The conversion was successful, but Steyn set up a tense finish as his penalty meant the Sharks were within a converted try of their own of levelling things up.
And they nearly had one as Lwazi Mvovo broke into the 22, but his grubber was gathered and cleared by White as the home side held on.
