Ireland lose World Cup play-off to Australia at Kingspan Stadium

Ireland's disappointing Women's Rugby World Cup isn't showing any signs of getting better after they were beaten 36-24 by Australia at Kingspan Stadium.

The host nation exited the main competition in the group stages and will now play-off for seventh place in their final game. Australia will go through to play for fifth position in the final rankings.

Ireland fell 5-0 behind in the early stages as Sharni Williams opened the scoring but Alison Miller touched down to send Ireland 7-5 ahead and after Australia bagged their season try of the day, Ailis Egan levelled the scores at 12-12.

That was to be as good as it got for Ireland as Australia took a 12-19 half-time lead. Two more tries after the break saw Australia open up a massive 24 point gap before Sophie Spence and Paula Fitzpatrick both touched down to at least halve the deficit by the final whistle.

Ireland will take on either Canada or Wales in the seventh place play-off match at Kingspan Stadium on Saturday at 2pm.
