There was optimism that the team could go where no Ireland team had gone before and reached the promised land of the last-four, but it was not to be.
It means the tenures of Joe Schmidt as head coach and Rory Best as captain come to a disappointing end as the former has left his post and the latter has retired following the tournament.
But their exit from the tournament has done nothing to dissuade scores of fans coming out to see their heroes return from Japan, with throngs of people in Dublin Airport to welcome them home.
