Serpent all set to strike over hurdles at Downpatrick

By Ron McKnight

The Edward O'Grady-trained Slippery Serpent won his bumper at Downpatrick last month and looks capable of a winning debut over flights in the opener at the course today.

Vittorio, with Ruby Walsh aboard, looks the likely favourite however Gordon Elliott's Hardline can supply the danger.

Out Of The Loop should be noted in the market.

Boytonrath ran yesterday, however Elliott has also Pinotage - fourth in similar conditions at Roscommon last time - engaged and looks a worthy alternative. Streak, Charms Bracelet and Naughty But Nice are others to consider.

Floramar, Up For Discussion and June Carter make most appeal in the maiden hurdle, and the last named is taken to enhance trainer Mark McNiff's strike rate at the venue.

Aa Bee See could solve a competitive Rated Novice Hurdle. JP McManus-owned horses have a good record at the course and the selection was a winner at Fairyhouse on his penultimate start. Canny Town heads a trio of dangers including What's The Plot and Get Smart.

The majority make their debut over fences in the EBF Beginners Chase. The Joseph O'Brien-trained Delayed Eloquence has a sequence of seconds but the change of discipline could change his luck if accounting for the locally-trained A Touch Of Sparkle, already runner-up over the larger obstacles.

Tranquil Magic, with course form, also warrants consideration. There Was A Time is open to improvement.

Hurricane Sky is a bit of an enigma in the Coors Handicap Chase. Poormans Hill is now under the care of Elliott, however Dinnie's Vinnie, Tb Broke Her and Cant Pay Wont Pay look a more reliable trio and the first named gets preference.

Casadel Sol - third to Slippery Serpent on his penultimate start - will have his claims highlighted by how the winner performs in the opener.

Roseriver Has, Shankill Castle and Stooshie are the trio to beat and the first named would be an apt winner on Nina Carberry's return to race riding following the birth of her daughter Rosie.
