Allen departs while defeat for schoolboy Page is just the start

By Paddy Smith

Mark Allen slumped to a disappointing 4-2 defeat against Mei Xi Wen at the Coral Welsh Open in Cardiff.

The Ulsterman started as favourite to book a place in the last 16 of the £366,000 event but the Chinese star was on top form.

Schoolboy Jackson Page's impressive run came to an end as he lost 4-0 to Judd Trump.

The 15-year-old has shown his potential this week by beating Jason Weston and John Astley in his first appearance at a pro tournament, becoming the youngest British player to reach the last 32 of a ranking event.

But Page, who is mentored by former world champion Mark Williams, was no match for Trump who fired breaks of 61 and 96.

"It was great out there but there were a lot of nerves and pressure too," said Page.

"I had a lot of support behind me but Judd is one of the best in the world. You won't get many chances and when you do, you have to take them.

"I'll take a lot from it. To win two games is great, you can't ask for too much at my age against Judd.

"I'll have a week in school and then I am off to Cyprus for the European Championship. I'll have a chance to turn professional if I win the Under-21s or the men's."
