Larne swimmer Danielle Hill makes ideal start with junior record splash

By David Kelly

Larne's Danielle Hill made the ideal start to her campaign at the Irish Open swimming championships when she set a new Irish junior record in the semi-finals of the 100m backstroke.

Hill cruised into today's 100m back final at the National Aquatic Centre when she chopped a tenth of a second off the time set by Jane Roberts in 2013, finishing in 1:04.12.

It proved to be a good opening night for Ulster swimmers as 15-year-old Rachel Bethel of Lisburn took the Irish 200m freestyle title. Bethel was the first Irish swimmer home in 2:03.72 in fourth spot overall, with 14-year-old Antoinette Neamt clocking 2:03.92 and Bethany Carson next in 2:05.67.

Alex Murphy of UCD joined Fiona Doyle and Sycerika McMahon at the World Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia after his 27.56 second winning swim in the 50m breaststroke.

Grainne Murphy returned to national level swimming with a win in the 800m freestyle.

Murphy set out with intent and led throughout the race to take the national title in 8:43.37.
