No Turkish delight as Sam exits

By John Flack

Sam Bothwell made a disappointing first round exit at the $15,000 tournament in Turkey yesterday.

The 20-year-old from Hillsborough, who had beaten two higher-ranked opponents in qualifying, went down 6-2, 6-2 to Romanian player Alexandru Manole.

Bothwell broke his opponent’s serve in the opening game of the match but that was as good as it got as Manole responded immediately and went on to take the first set.

The first four games in the second went with serve but Bothwell lost the next four.

Now it will be up to his big brother Peter to attempt to keep the family flag flying when he begins his campaign today.

The 22-year-old returns to action after seven weeks out due to injury when he takes on another Romanian, Calin Manda, who came through qualifying.
