Bejenaru defies niggling injury as Robb celebrates surprise triumph

By John Flack

Karola Bejenaru and Jakob Robb lifted the singles trophies at the Boat Club graded tournament finals yesterday.

Windsor ace Bejenaru defeated Ulster team-mate Kerri Russell (ATT Ballymena) 6-1 6-2, which wasn't unexpected, but Robb's 6-7 7-5 7-6 victory over Karl Donaldson will go down as an upset.

ATT player Donaldson has been a regular in the Ulster team in recent years while Robb hasn't even been in the mix for a place in the line-up.

However, the Windsor youngster has certainly laid down a marker with this victory.

Bejenaru, meanwhile, revealed after her victory that she is still not 100% fit as she struggles to shake off a hip injury.

She said: "I have been getting regular physio on the injury which comes and goes and we don't know what has caused it which is a bit of a worry.

"I played pretty well over the weekend, especially in the final, but the astro turf courts here put a bit more strain on my hip."

Bejenaru's next assignment on the ITF circuit will be a $15,000 tournament in Madrid, starting on September 15.
