Jessica Leeman makes mark with Malahide win

By David Kelly

Jessica Leeman will be hoping to build on her success at Malahide as she looks ahead to the the summer schedule of tournaments.

Leeman, from the Hawarden club, won the under-14 title at the Malahide junior event which rubber stamped her position as the number one ranked player in Ulster at under-14.

She eased through to the decider with a 6-1 6-1 victory over Alison Kate O'Dea to set up a tough duel with Dubliner Kate Moore.

Leeman, seeded fourth, started on fire when she won the first set 6-1 but then the momentum swung the way of Moore as she won the second 7-5.

That set up what was expected to be a tight deciding set but the Belfast teenager raised her game once more and dug deep to take the third set 6-2.

Leeman will now look ahead to following up this win with further victories in events north and south of the border.

The Malahide also saw first year under-14 Jessica Moore from the Windsor club make the quarter-finals.

Moore, who went out to number one seed Katie Morrissey, had beaten Leeman in the semi-finals of the Ulster Spring Matchplays earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Karola Bejenaru failed to make the first round of the ITF Grade 1 event in Italy, losing 6-2 4-6 3-6 to Francescain Brancato of Italy in the final qualifying round.
