Johanna Konta bows out of Volvo Open after shock loss

By Eleanor Crooks

Johanna Konta suffered a shock straight-sets defeat to World No.219 Fanny Stollar in the second round of the Volvo Car Open in Charleston.

Konta, the sixth seed, received a bye in the first round but could only win seven games as she crashed to a 6-3 6-4 loss to the 19-year-old Hungarian in South Carolina.

Stollar had to play two qualifying matches before seeing off fellow qualifier Francesca Di Lorenzo in the first round and she maintained that good form against the World No.22 to progress into the last-16, where she will take on Kiki Bertens.

Konta secured her only two breaks to briefly lead 3-2 but Stollar hit back to win four successive games to clinch the opening set in 35 minutes.

A break of serve in the ninth game of the second set was enough for Stollar to avenge her straight-sets defeat to Konta in the Fed Cup in February.
