Karola bows out on a tough day for Ulster stars

by John Flack

Karola Bejenaru has missed out on an opportunity to climb up the world ladder after failing to make the main draw at the $25,000 ITF tournament in Surrey yesterday.

The 20-year-old Windsor player went down 6-2 6-1 to Georgian Miriam Bolkvadze, ranked 459, in the final round of qualifying.

Bejenaru did have her chances but was unable to take them, notably when she was 4-2 down in the first set and had break points to get herself back on track.

Meanwhile, Jessica Leeman is a doubtful starter for Ulster's senior and junior inter-pro campaigns later this month after being forced to retire from the ITF Junior tournament in Dundalk yesterday due to a stomach muscle problem.

She was level at one set apiece (6-4 5-7) when she had to quit in her match with Italy's Valentina Urelli Rinaldi.

On a disappointing day for Ulster players, there were also defeats for Jordan McKeown, Ben McClurg and Peter Corrie against British opposition.

McKeown lost 6-3 6-3 to Finn Murgets, McClurg went down 3-6 6-2 6-2 to third seed Julian Lewis and Corrie fell to a 3-6 7-5 6-4 defeat against title favourite Tad MacLean.
