Konta shows fight to clear first US hurdle
Johanna Konta got her US Open campaign up and running with a battling three-set win over Daria Kasatkina.
The British No1, seeded 16th, knew she was in for a tough opening round and so it proved against the unpredictable Russian.
But Konta, cheered on by Avengers star Tom Hiddleston, produced some marvellous shot-making as the end game arrived for Kasatkina, the Brit progressing 6-1 4-6 6-2.
"I'd lost my last two matches to her and expected a long, tough match," said Konta. "That's what it was and I'm pleased with how I managed to adapt."
Konta will now play Russian Margarita Gasparyan.
Dan Evans became the first British player through to the men's second round after victory over Adrian Mannarino of France.
The British No.2 triumphed 6-4 6-3 2-6 6-3 in a shade over three hours.
