McKeown gets foot on the world ladder thanks to a landmark win

By John Flack

Jordan McKeown has picked up a first professional world ranking point after an outstanding win at the Irish Senior Open in Dublin yesterday.

The Bangor teenager, who had come through a gruelling qualifying campaign, defeated Dubliner Ammar Elamin 3-6 6-3 6-4.

Elamin is the Irish No.1 at Under-18 level but McKeown's win should see him take over the mantle.

Elsewhere, Hillsborough man Peter Bothwell is safely through to the second round after a reasonably straightforward 6-4 6-4 win over Sweden's Niklas Johansson.

But there was disappointment for Peter's younger brother Sam, who lost 6-4 6-3 to Austrian Tomislav Papac.

In the women's event, Windsor's Karola Bejenaru continues her campaign in the last 16 today after an impressive opening win on Monday.
