Ralston looking to the positives after an almighty effort in Bahrain

By John Flack

Ulster's Caleb Ralston bowed out of the ITF junior world ranking tournament in Bahrain yesterday after defying the odds to reach his first semi-final on the circuit.

The Lurgan teenager, who had earlier dismissed the top seed, went down 5-7 6-4 6-3 to fourth-ranked Indian Mann Shah.

Ralston was out of action for four months with a back injury and only returned to the tournament scene in August.

He said: "I'm really pleased with my performance this week, although I'm a little disappointed to miss out on the final."

• World No.1 Simona Halep is out of the WTA Finals in Singapore after losing to Elina Svitolina in the last round-robin match.

Halep needed to beat the Ukrainian, but went down 6-3 6-4 and will now head home. She will lose her crown as the world's best if Karolina Pliskova wins the title tomorrow.

Caroline Garcia will face Venus Williams in the semis, while Pliskova lies in wait for Caroline Wozniacki.
