Ulster four in badminton team for Belgium tournament

By Staff Reporter

Four Ulster badminton players have been selected as part of the Ireland squad heading off to Belgium in February.

Raphoe members Rachael Darragh and Chloe, Same and Josh Magee will be joined by Leinster's Scott Evans and Sara Boyle when they take on some tough opposition in the group stages of the 2015 European Mixed Team Championships.

Rachel and Sara will be hoping for better results than last weekend when they lost out at the Turkish International to, respectively, top seeds Joanna Chaube from France and second seed Busra Unl from the host country.

The event, which is due to take place from February 11-15 in Leuven, Belgium, will host the world's best teams and Ireland have already been drawn in the difficult Group Two against England and Belgium.

While Ireland has a world ranking of 29, eight places ahead of Belgium, the teams are quite evenly matched and both came through the November qualifying rounds. England is the seeded team in Group Two, currently ranked 13th in the world.

There will be four groups in total at the European Mixed Team Championships, each consisting of a seeded team and two teams from the qualifying rounds last month.

The top two in each group will progress to the quarter final stage and the Ireland team are hoping that this will be the year they break into Europe's elite top eight teams.
