Belfast woman becomes the UK's youngest granny after daughter gives birth aged 15

By Patricia Devlin

A north Belfast woman has officially become the UK’s youngest granny — at just 30 years old.

The mother of two is said to be “over the moon” after her 15-year-old daughter gave birth to a baby girl last week.

The teenager welcomed her “princess” into the world along with her 17-year-old boyfriend by her side at a Belfast hospital.

Yesterday messages of support from well wishers continued to flood in over social media for the new parents, who are from opposite sides of the political divide.

One pal said: “Congrats mate shes gorgeous well done til both of you...”

Another wrote: “Congratulations on the birth of ur little princess hope mum n baby r keeping well”.

While another wellwisher said: “I’m sure your little princess is just gorgeous! Yous will both be brilliant!”

The new gran is believed to have already made a number of visits to see her new granddaughter, who is expected home with her young mum in the coming days.

And the 30-year-old has vowed to help her daughter cope with parenthood at such a young age, drawing on her own experience of becoming a mum at 14 herself.

Sunday Life revealed in March how the woman, who has declined to speak to the media, discovered her 15-year-old daughter was pregnant late last year.

The secondary school student excitedly announced news of her pregnancy on social media site Facebook earlier this year, telling pals: “I can’t wait to be a mum.”

She also told friends on social media last month: “Just can’t wait to hold him or her in my arms, really don’t think it’s hit me yet.”

While Sunday Life spoke to the soon-to-be grandmother, she said her family did not want to speak publicly.

The teenager’s boyfriend, who is believed to be aged 17, also revealed his excitement online.

Commenting under a picture of their unborn baby’s scan, the then dad-to-be revealed he was hoping for a baby boy, while his girlfriend replied: “I know lv [love] hopefully, but we don’t care as long as it’s healthy.”

The teenage boy’s mother also added her congratulations.

Writing under the baby scan photo, she said. “My precious little bundle so proud of you an [dad’s name] love u.”

In 1999, a Yorkshire woman became Britain’s youngest ever granny in recent times aged 26.

In 2008, Cheshire woman Tracey Smith spoke of her joy at becoming one of Britain’s youngest grannies. The 36-year-old, who became pregnant with her first baby at 16, became a gran when her youngest daughter, aged 17, had her first child.
