Comic Con Northern Ireland brings some light relief to Lisburn

By Ali Gordon

Flash Gordon topped the bill at the first day of MCM Northern Ireland Comic Con at the Eikon Centre in Lisburn yesterday.

The film star, whose real name is Sam J Jones, was surrounded by fans at the event that brought stars of the small and silver screen to Northern Ireland.

“This is my first time in Ireland and I’m really enjoying it,” Jones told Sunday Life.

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect but people are really cool and it’s been a great event.

“I knew Ireland would be beautiful and the people are very genuine so I’m pleased to be here.”

Other celebrities at the packed-out venue included Summer Glau from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, The Hobbit’s Manu Bennett and True Blood’s Kristin Bauer van Straten. Three of the original Power Rangers line-up — Karan Ashley, Austin St John and David J Fielding — were also in attendance.

Many visitors dressed up, with a number going as Catwoman, Suicide Squad’s Harley Quinn, Batman and The Mad Hatter.

Day two of MCM Northern Ireland Comic Con is on today at the Eikon Centre from 11am-5pm, with tickets starting at £10.
