Instead of the Triple Crown, it was Triple Clowns as Ireland blew their Croke Park farewell last night.
Scotland’s 23-20 win in Dublin tore up the script and denied disjointed Ireland their last chance of consolation following the surrender of last season’s Grand Slam and Six Nations championship glory.
Those mantles passed to France, 12-10 winners over England in Paris. Adding injury to insult, captain Brian O’Driscoll was taken to hospital after suffering a knee injury.
Vice-captain Paul O’Connell later admitted: “We're really disappointed. We didn't want to finish on a note like that.”
