Victorious David Jeffrey dubbed Portadown desperately tough opponents but insisted: “Over all Linfield deserved to win and I’m just so pleased.”
And Blues boss Jeffrey added: “We made a fantastic start. Our aim was to start at a high tempo and we did that.
“The idea was to press the ball high up the pitch and it worked. Our first goal stemmed from just that with the ball breaking for Damien Curran.
“And when he put a fantastic ball into the box Pistol Pete drove it into the net.”
At that stage Jeffrey thought Linfield had knocked the stuffing out of their opponents but conceded: “When they scored it galvanised them and they came storming back. They really did.
“The first half was excellent but I didn’t think the second half was as good."
