Down almost dumped out

Last year’s All-Ireland|runners-up Down got the fright of their lives at Cusack Park, Ennis yesterday when they came away with a single-point victory over a gallant Clare in round one of the football qualifiers.

But for a late intervention by Down’s Conor Laverty, who cleared off his line a minute into injury-time, the Mournemen could have been put to the sword by an NFL Division 4 team

It took a last-minute Paul McComiskey free to give the Ulster side a victory that looked unlikely as a resurgent home side put in an enormous effort to try and pull off a shock.
