Down mum charged with trying to kill her child

A 37-year-old mother has been ordered to stand trial accused of attempting to murder one of her own children.

Newtownards woman Rasa Zaman is also accused of assaulting her husband Qamar Zaman and issuing threats to him that she would kill three of their children on October 12 last year.

Zaman, wearing a black leather jacket and with her red hair pulled back into a pony tail, remained handcuffed as she stood in the dock of the town’s Magistrates Court on Friday.

She said ‘no’ when asked if she wished to say anything to the charges.

Defence solicitor Andrew Russell told the court he was applying for legal aid to be extended to allow for a senior QC to be instructed in the case given the “complex issues and mental health issues” associated with the case.

Previously, he had revealed that Zaman, of Windsor Avenue, has been transferred from the women’s prison at Hydebank to a mental health unit where she is being detained under a mental health order.

Returning the case to Downpatrick Crown Court, District Judge Mark Hamill remanded Zaman back into custody and ordered her to appear at the higher court on April 20 for arraignment when the charges will be put to her for the first time.

He also granted the defence application for legal aid for two counsel to be instructed.
