Furious DUP officials desperately tried to distance the party from another sex scandal this week.
Spin-doctors bombarded the offices of broadcasters and newspapers during the rape trial of Ballymena councillor William Wilkinson demanding that they stop referring to him as a “former DUP member”.
Clearly stung by damage inflicted by the media coverage of Iris Robinson’s toyboy romps, party officials rang the BBC and a number of daily newspapers to angrily attack the coverage of the Wilkinson case.
One media source said “They were livid that reports of the rape trial were saying that Wilkinson ever belonged the DUP. They wanted that dropped from our reports."
