Nigel Worthington has urged Gareth McAuley to quit Ipswich Town and join Old Firm giants Rangers this summer.

McAuley, who will earn his 22nd cap against Chile today, is a close season target for Ibrox boss Walter Smith and would become his first signing in over two years.

The expected arrival of a new owner at the SPL champions along with the transfer of defender Danny Wilson to Liverpool would prompt the Gers to make a £500k bid.

McAuley (30) still has one year to go on his contract at the Championship club and admits he would be happy to stay.

But Northern Ireland chief Worthington insists Big G should jump at the chance of joining a top flight team.

He said: “I'm not surprised that bigger clubs are being mentioned with Gareth. He’s a good pro and very focussed. The more players we can have at the top end of the league, whether it be the Premier League or Scottish Premiership, the better."
