Get voting for your local hero

It’s time to select the most inspirational and unsung person in

By John McGurk

It’s your last chance to vote for Northern Ireland’s unsung heroes. Voting lines for the Flybe/Sunday Life Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards close tomorrow night at midnight.

The Flybe/Sunday Life awards, which were launched by this newspaper in October, has sought out men, women and children who you believe best capture the Spirit of Northern Ireland by selflessly serving |others.

Since then readers have been nominating the person they believe shows the Flybe/Sunday Life Spirit of Northern Ireland.

Over the past 10 weeks, we have featured 40 ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things to help others. Based on the public vote over the past 10 weeks, today we publish a shortlist of the 20 semi-finalists. We are asking readers to vote for the person they believe most deserving of the top award. Of these 20, the 10 who receive the highest number of votes will make up the final shortlist, from which the winner will be picked.

The winner of the overall Spirit of Northern Ireland award will receive a new Peugeot 107 car as a recognition of the contribution they have made to others. The person who nominates the winner will themselves win a pair of flights from Flybe.

All semi-finalists are being invited to a gala dinner at the Ramada Hotel in Belfast on January 20, at which the overall winner — chosen by a panel of judges from the public’s top ten — will be announced.

Entertainment will be provided by acts including X Factor star Ruth Lorenzo and Britain’s Got Talent finalists Signature.
