Irish were no flops
Ireland's bold cricketers fly home from Calcutta today, many heads sore from celebrating a belated St Patrick’s Day and the stunning victory over Netherlands — but all of them held high.
Yet despite winning the admiration of the cricketing world, deep down there was a sense of what might have been. The squad had come to India with real intent of making the World Cup quarter-finals.
The never-to-be forgotten win over England and the final game victory over Netherlands could and should have been complemented by wins over Bangladesh and West Indies and thus a passage to the knock-out stages.
