Johnson's retirement a big blow
It was just how the quiet man of Northern Ireland football wanted it to be. No fuss, no drama. A simple statement on Thursday morning from the Irish FA announced Damien Johnson’s immediate retirement from international football.
Ongoing back trouble has forced the 31-year-old midfielder, capped 56 times by his country, to quit Northern Ireland so that he can concentrate solely on his club football at Plymouth Argyle.
Johnson has been a terrific servant for Northern Ireland over the years and was thought by many at a time to be one of our most gifted and talented players.
