Make 'em Trimble in fear
Ulster's 1999 Heineken Cup triumph is a source of huge pride. That comes from being the first Irish province to have been champions of Europe. The downside is that since winning the trophy almost 12 years ago, each season they have failed to qualify for the knock-out stages.
Indeed the season after being crowned champions came the ignominy of losing each of their six pool matches. Paradoxical? Try humiliating.
Yet despite those facts there is a growing belief that Ulster might just buck convention this time by progressing beyond Pool 4 and taking their place in next April’s quarter-finals.
