Matty the Lionel King

Matty Burrows was last night half way to paradise after being handed a massive boost in his quest to win FIFA’s prestigious Ferenc Puskas Trophy.

The winner of the award for the best goal of 2010 will not be announced until January 10.

But Burrows’ late spectacular back heel volley which beat Portadown in a Carling Premiership game at The Oval back in October has already topped the poll with one of the world’s biggest football satellitte channels.

The Glentoran ace has been crowned ‘King’ by ESPN on their soccernet website, beating off the challenges of Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi and Arsenal’s Samir Nasri, both of whom are also rivals for the FIFA crown.

Last night Burrows was in jubilant mood and beamed: “Brilliant. It’s the perfect Christmas gift and now hopefully I can make it a double.

“I never cease to be amazed by the global response. It’s very flattering.

“It also focuses the spotlight on Glentoran and the Irish League which can only be good.

“Contrary to what many people tend to think, it shows local players are capable of producing memorable moments. And as far as I’m concerned this was mine."
