Ministers: We'll take our pay cut

New Stormont Minister Alex Attwood says the Executive should follow the lead of David Cameron’s new Cabinet and take a pay cut.

The DUP’s Arlene Foster is also for up for the idea saying she had “no problem” taking a pay cut and believes ministers should discuss the idea.

In response to a Sunday Life query, Sinn Fein ministers Martin McGuinness, Catriona Ruane, Conor Murphy, Michelle Gildernew and Gerry Kelly gave their thumbs up to cutting Executive salaries.

The SF ministers were at a party conference in Dublin yesterday but a spokesman for them said: “The Sinn Fein Ministers in the Executive do not have a problem with this. They would be prepared to take a cut in salary, they have no problem with this suggestion at all.”

At present the First and Deputy First Ministers earn £71,434 plus their MLA salary of £43,000.
