It's billed as a harmless way for young girls to make quick cash from rich older men - but Sunday Life went undercover to find out why the world of online sugar daddies isn’t always so sweet.

It took just five minutes to sign up to specialist dating site, Seeking Arrangement in my hunt for a sugar daddy.

Posing as a hard-up student on the look out for extra money, all I had to do was upload a picture, my vital statistics, and how much cash I was looking for in return for my company.

Within minutes, I had been bombarded with messages and cash offers from around the world which ranged from a man in Newcastle Upon Tyne asking me to “act as his girlfriend” in front of family members, to a charmer in Donegal who wrote: “Hi, can you travel for sex? Today. Will pay. Bring costumes.”

In amongst all these was 39-year-old divorced Dave* the Co Down vet - AKA the world’s worst sugar daddy - who listed himself as being worth a cool £1.25 million.

After a few messages via Seeking Arrangement, I spoke to Dave on the phone and without much polite conversation, he admitted he was a farmer, not a vet and bluntly offered me £150 a week to perform vile sex acts.

“Are you open minded in the bedroom? I’m into roleplay and things like that,” he said.

“This will work because you’re getting what you want, I’m getting what I want and everyone’s happy.

“If it doesn’t work out there’s no house or kids to worry about - there’s no mess.”

Following our chat, Dave sent me up a follow-up message making it very clear what he expected from me: “Are you on the pill and OK with **** that’s what I was getting at,” he wrote.

When he suggested we meet up, I thought he might choose a smart restaurant given his millionaire status, so I was left a little deflated when he offered to buy me a cheap coffee at a Belfast McDonald’s.

When the £2.70 bill arrived things got even worse after Dave’s card was rejected - TWICE - and this sugar baby had to stump up the cash to pay for us both.

He wasn’t nearly as embarrassed as he should have been.

During our chat Dave revealed he’d had two arrangements with sugar babies in the past and was looking for his third because his hectic work schedule meant he didn’t have time for a relationship.

When I asked him if he thought his needs might be better served by an escort rather than a sugar baby, he said: “I’m not into that. With this you keep seeing the same girl, with an escort you don’t know who you’re getting or who’s been there before you.

“I’d one girl I was chatting to online and she asked me if I wanted her to do a camera show, I said yes so off she went - I could see what she’d had for breakfast - she was an escort. F****** disgusting.”

After the McDonald’s disaster and several dozen more sexually explicit text messages, Dave asked me if I was looking for love with a sugar daddy.

When I replied that I wasn’t, he said: “Thank f*** because love don’t exist! Lust does though I love the lust bit but hate the love bit that means ya gotta take them out, feed them, water them for the same result. Am too tired! Lol.”

But not all the sugar daddies I met were like Dave.

One Belfast businessman in his 30s said he realised he’d “got the wrong idea” about the site when a woman asked him to pay for her plastic surgery minutes into their conversation.

Simon*, an attractive and single managing director who claimed to have a whopping net worth of £6 million, told me: “I came on here thinking it was for girls looking to date smart successful fellas.

“I spoke to a couple like that but it’s mainly escorts or girls looking to get paid,” he said.

On his profile, Simon offered to pay sugar babies up to £3,000 a month in “support”.

“Some girls seem nice but they want cash or presents before we meet,” he added.

“One girl asked me to buy her new t*** for £4,000 after talking to me on here for about three minutes.

“She did say I could play with them but I don’t think that’s worth four grand.”

Just when I’d given up hope that a suave sugar daddy could be found, I received a message from John* who asked to meet me at a plush Belfast hotel.

Describing himself as “handsome and erotic” with a net worth of £1.25 million, John was a high flying businessman who travels to Northern Ireland from his base in mainland Europe regularly for work.

Married and 51-years-old, he fit the profile of a typical sugar daddy. He boasted about his success and business prowess, and was keen to talk up his links to a local sports team.

But he was also kind and charming, and told me to make sure I kept myself safe and avoided the sugar daddy “weirdos” out there.

Explaining his reasons for using Seeking Arrangement, he said: “This is an exciting thing to do once in a while.

“It’s fun meeting people who are a little open minded - there’s something very sexy and erotic about meeting strangers this way and having an intelligent conversation.”

Wearing his wedding ring, he was very open about his relationship with his wife and told me: “I’ve been married for more than 20 years, we went through a rough patch.

“During that we just kinda decided we shouldn’t have tight reins, we didn’t think it was so necessary to be faithful - it’s just a more modern way of looking at things.

“These things don’t have to affect your relationship if you don’t let them.” When I asked about his wife’s attitude to his cheating he said: “She knows, she just doesn’t ask for details.”

While he admitted he’s had several arrangements with Belfast sugar babies in the past, John said: “I’ve found some women use the site because they want to get married to leave wherever they are. There are foreign girls who come across as really desperate, it’s sad but I avoid them. I’ve had great experiences with Belfast women and it’s worked very well, I hope to have more.”

After our coffee, which he paid for, John promised to take me to one of the city’s top restaurants to “wine and dine” me.

Addressing the arrangement before he left, he winked and said: “I won’t insult you by talking numbers, but rest assured if this goes further you’ll be well taken care of financially.”

In the end I may have found a sugar daddy, but the whole experience left me with a very bitter taste.
