THE taxi driver at the centre of a sex tape scandal has been sacked by Value Cabs after the matter was reported to police.
ootage emerged last week of a man and a woman engaging in a sex act in the back of the driver’s taxi in Belfast and quickly went viral after being shared on social media.
The man in the footage later contacted the PSNI and said the images, believed to have been recorded last weekend, were taken without his consent.
He also claimed to have been subjected to racist abuse online after the graphic footage went viral.
In a statement issued to concerned customers, Value Cabs said: “This self-employed taxi driver breached his driver guidelines and is no longer affiliated to Value Cabs. This incident is now in the hands of the PSNI.”
When contacted by Sunday Life, the alleged male victim declined to comment and directed our reporter to his legal representatives, who said there was no comment to make because of “ongoing legal proceedings”. It is unclear whether the proceedings relate to criminal charges, a civil lawsuit or both.
The man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, reported the matter to police on Monday evening.
Following this, the PSNI asked members of the public to refrain from sharing the footage.
The videos were recorded from a camera in the front of the taxi and show the driver in a Value Cabs uniform with the couple in the back seat.
The driver appears to keep his eyes on the road throughout most of the journey while the couple begin kissing before engaging in a sex act.
An awkward exchange follows at the end of the journey when the male passenger pays the £17.80 fare, plus a £2.20 tip, and the driver quips “Cheaper than a room” before chuckling to himself as he tucks away a £20 note.
Three clips of the incident, two at around a minute long and one lasting 20 seconds, have been shared widely on the internet.
It is unclear how the footage ended up on social media. Value Cabs has so far refused to comment.
Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph last week, the man in the footage said it was shared against his will.
Many of the comments swirling around on social media mocked the couple and laughed at the driver’s joke, but the male passenger said they had also been subjected to hateful comments and that a complaint had been made against his business.
He added: “A complaint was made against the company. I started getting racist stuff as well.”
The PSNI said: “Police have received reports in relation to video footage circulating on social media.
“Inquiries in relation to this are continuing and we would ask that this footage is not shared. There are no further details at this time.”
Members of the public, including friends of the woman involved, also appealed to people on social media to stop sharing the footage.
