A dangerous rapist branded "callous" by a judge is planning a new life outside Northern Ireland when he is released from jail.
Ex-soldier Gerry 'Vermin' Verner has told inmates at Maghaberry Prison he will be moving to Scotland when his 10-year sentence expires later this year.
The 32-year-old predator had been released on licence in 2018 but was thrown back inside a short time after when Sunday Life revealed his links to East Belfast UVF figures and fellow rapists Michael Gilbert and Joe 'The Mexican' McCabe.
Verner also had a secret girlfriend who had been staying over at his Inverary Avenue apartment - a direct breach of licence conditions which instruct him to inform probation officers of any new relationship.
Now virtually friendless, the rapist is reportedly planning a move to Ayrshire to start a new life in a community that knows nothing of his past.
"Verner has told inmates at Maghaberry he has had enough and will be moving to stay with a mate in Scotland," said a jail source.
"When he was out the last time, he had the protection of the East Belfast UVF, but now they want nothing to do with him. He's had word delivered that if he steps foot in east Belfast again, he will be shot."
Verner, who is originally from the Shankill Road, was convicted of raping, falsely imprisoning, assaulting and threatening to kill a 19-year-old woman in 2011.
He forced his terrified victim to go to his house, where he subjected her to 10 minutes of an 'honesty' interrogation during which he threatened to cut off a finger for every lie she told.
This was the fourth female who Verner had physically and violently assaulted.
As well as being jailed for seven years, with an added three on licence, the thug was handed a lifetime court order which bans him from having a relationship with a female without first informing the authorities and telling her about his past.
Prison insiders say that Verner's worrying associations extend to more than just the East Belfast UVF.
"When he was inside the first time round, Verner was best mates with rapists Michael Gilbert and Joe McCabe," added our source.
Glue-sniffing Gilbert (31), who lives in north Belfast, served just half a seven-year sentence for raping a woman three times while her young son slept in an adjoining bedroom. He bound and gagged his victim, battered her with a hammer and slashed her with a Stanley blade during an hour-long torture ordeal.
McCabe (36) was caged for seven years for raping a 64-year-old woman but is now back behind bars after being caught shop-lifting.
Our source said: "Verner's other big friend in jail is the baby killer Ryan Leslie, who murdered his 14-week-old son.
"When he was up in Magilligan Prison, he (Verner) was bullying the inmates, taking their prescription drugs and selling them on.
"But Verner can't get on like that in Maghaberry because the prisoners there aren't as vulnerable. He also doesn't have the protection of the UVF, which is why he's telling people he is moving to Scotland when he gets out."
Before he was jailed for rape, Verner had served with the British Army in Afghanistan, but was medically discharged having been deafened in one ear during a no-warning Taliban bomb.
After the court case ended, the father of the teenager he sexually assaulted revealed how she had been forced to drop out of university and give up her job.
He said: "It has been a terrible, terrible time for her. She was a first year at university but dropped out and left her part-time job. She's still getting counselling. Some days she finds it hard to go out. She cries constantly but now all this is over we hope it gives her that wee bit of closure and she can try to look forward."
