Orangeman Keith Cardy facing child sex charge

By Paul Higgins

This is the alleged pervert set to go on trial accused of sexual communication with a girl.

Co Down Orangeman Keith Cardy (44) faces a single count of engaging in sexual communication with a girl under 16 "for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification...the communication being sexual or intended to encourage the said child to make a communication that was sexual".

The offence is alleged to have taken place between April 11-29 this year.

Last Friday at Newtownards Magistrates Court, defence barrister Conor Holmes said while the offence would be contested, the trial would proceed "on the papers and legal submissions."

He told the court there was a videotaped police interview with the alleged victim but that did not need to be played at the contest as the statement has been agreed.

Cardy, from the Southwell Road in Bangor, was freed on continuing bail.

District Judge Mark Hamill said he would review the case on December 29 ahead of the contest which he scheduled for January 5 next year.
