With both sides pushing for promotion, a high-octane clash of championship fervour was anticipated but in truth the Mournemen were never in any degree of trouble against an Armagh side that conceded 1-5 in the opening ten minutes. The tempo was set as early as the second minute when Down rocked their visitors, a cross from Daniel Hughes eluding goalkeeper Philip McEvoy for Brendan Coulter to finish the ball to the net. And within the next two minutes the home team streaked further ahead with Mark Poland and Martin Clarke from a free hoisting them into a 1-2 to nil lead.
