Change of fortune doesn’t come any better than that being enjoyed by young Paul Stirling as Ireland this week embark on another World Cup adventure in the West Indies — this time the Twenty20 variety.

Turn the calendar back less than three months and the 19-year-old Carrickfergus player found himself in the doldrums, watching from the wrong side of the boundary rope as Ireland sailed through the qualifying tournament in the UAE. He may have been the second highest scorer in the opening game against Afghanistan yet, much to most people’s surprise, he sat out the remaining five.
