Shoulder to cry on
Northern Ireland’s bruising Euro qualifying defeat in Belgrade has left boss Nigel Worthington nursing an injury triple whammy ahead of Tuesday’s must-win Windsor Park clash with Slovenia on Tuesday.
Skipper Aaron Hughes suffered a dislocated shoulder in Friday night’s 2-1 reverse against Serbia, it emerged yesterday.
As the Fulham star flew back to London for treatment, Worthy’s team arrived in Belfast with further injury worries over striker Kyle Lafferty and defender Jonny Evans.
Record goalscorer David Healy is suspended after a yellow card in Belgrade, joining already ruled out midfielder Steven Davis among the missing.
But boss Worthy remained defiant last night despite the threat of having to select a team from a severely depleted squad.
“We'll nurse the injured players over the next 48 hours and give them every chance to play,” he vowed. “But whichever team we put out will be capable of delivering what’s expected of them and that’s a win.”
