Snouts in the public trough

Christmas came early last week for MLAs who got to tuck into festive feasts — subsidised by hard-up taxpayers.

In the winter that the 108-strong Assembly debated a devastating budget which could lead to thousands of job losses, Assembly Members enjoyed slap-up Yuletide lunches at bargain prices in the Stormont canteen.

Three-course Christmas dinners in the grandeur of Parliament Buildings cost MLAs just £5.30 a head this year.

A comparable seasonal lunch at a restaurant in Belfast would cost between £20 and £30.
