Spike ends it on a high

Friends and foes alike have been lining up to pay tribute to Irish League legend Glenn Ferguson.

Spike’ as he has been affectionately known, hung up his boots yesterday after Lisburn Distillery’s final game of the season against Cliftonville at New Grosvenor Stadium.

It brought to an end a glorious career which spanned more than two decades during which he racked up more than 500 goals to become the second highest scorer of all time.

The Great Man decided to bow out as he put it ‘to avoid crippling myself in my old age.’He said: “I’ve been there and done all I could ever wished for in the game.

“I’ll be 42 in July so now is the time for me to call it a day. I suppose I could have gone on for another season but the risk of injury was too great."
