James Teelan. Remember the name.

The livewire Newry City forward set the Championship leaders on their way to a well-deserved Irish Cup triumph over Premiership neighbours Warrenpoint Town.

All round, Darren Mullen’s men were outstanding in a fabulous occasion at a packed Milltown with stand-out displays from Francis Brennan and Ryan McGivern at the back and Daniel Hughes full of guile in attack. In the wind, rain and biting cold though, the hottest player on the pitch was 19-year-old Teelan.

After Warrenpoint had been denied on a couple of occasions by alert goalkeeper Niall Brady, Teelan stepped up with a clinical finish on 41 minutes to give the visitors the lead. He had fizzed before that and was electric after — a super-charged display in keeping with the impressive nature of how Newry dealt with the tie.

On the hour mark, Brennan headed in at the back post, while Teelan and Hughes were unfortunate not to add to the tally.

New Town signing Daniel McKenna came off the bench to score on 87 minutes and offer hope for the home side, who in injury time hit the bar through Steven Ball, but it was all too little too late.

“We had a game plan after watching lots of footage on Warrenpoint and we were excellent all over the pitch on and off the ball,” said Newry boss Mullen. “I thought 2-1 flattered them. We were set up really well and we are a young, fit team going forward and have players who can hurt the opposition.”

Honest Town manager Barry Gray said: “We were sluggish and played into Newry’s hands too easily and missed big chances. When you do that against decent opposition, you are in trouble.

“Newry deserved to win, we were second best and good luck to them in the next round.”
