Coleraine navigated their way into the second round of the Samuel Gelston’s Whiskey Irish Cup with a 6-0 win against Windmill Stars at The Showgrounds.

The Bannsiders made the breakthrough on 26 minutes when Jamie Glackin found the back of the net with a delightful lob, before strikers Curtis Allen and Matthew Shevlin got in on the act with close-range finishes.

There was joy for Patrick Kelly who netted his first goal for the club on 52 minutes with Aaron Jarvis and James McLaughlin both scoring after coming on as substitutes.

Coleraine boss Oran Kearney remarked that his side treated the contest like they would any other.

“We knew that Windmill Stars came here with a bit of pedigree after beating Armagh City, who are top of the Premier Intermediate, as well as Tobermore United who are also in that League,” he said.

“I know it’s a cliché but today was their Cup Final so to speak where they are arriving here for a day out which they’ve earned.

“With that, we paid them respect as we had them watched during a friendly on Tuesday night in Banbridge.

“Winkie Murphy went to watch it to make sure we did our due diligence as we would with any other club.

“It’s great that we weighed in with goals all over the pitch. I’m delighted with the levels we hit in our performance.”

The defeat brings an end to Stars’ Cup run and boss Kieran McCourt hopes to take the positives into the rest of the campaign.

“It’s a great experience for the club and the players,” he acknowledged.

“As I had said to the boys beforehand, we had won our Cup Final before we even got here. We had done the hard work so we were here to enjoy the occasion.”
