Rip-roaring win for Glentoran in the Irish Cup final

Cliftonville 1 Glentoran 3

By Gordon Hanna

Glentoran came back from  the dead to win a rip-roaring  Marie Curie Irish Cup Final at Windsor Park and shattered Cliftonville’s dream of an historic treble.

Victory only came in extra- time but the underdogs from  the East — the paupers of the  Irish League who at times could  not pay the players wages —  turned the game on its head in  the second half.

Cliftonville dominated the  first 45 minutes and looked all  set to add the Blue Riband trophy  to the IRN-BRU League  Cup and the Premiership title  already safely tucked away at  Solitude.

But Eddie Patterson, sensationally  sacked by the Reds two  years ago, lifted the Glens with  a no holds barred half-time rollicking.

Suddenly Glentoran were  reinvigorated, pegged back the  much fancied champions then  completely overran them.
