Stab attack sparks war

The man accused of launching a frenzied knife attack on UVF boss Harry Stockman in front of terrified Tesco shoppers is David ‘Dee' Madine — a suspected UVF gunman and former loyalist prisoner.

Madine, 40, was remanded in custody on Thursday charged with attempting to murder Stockman, a nephew of murdered Shankill Butcher William ‘Basher’ Bates.

He's accused of stabbing the 50-year-old UVF leader a dozen times in the Tesco store at the top of the Shankill Road.

Madine's solicitor Denis Moloney told the court that his client made “an open and frank admission” of his involvement to police.
