Stuff the Faroes

Nigel Worthington last night ordered his Northern Ireland battlers to show no mercy in Tuesday’s vital Euro clash with Group C whipping boys the Faroe Islands.

But the Northern Ireland boss insists he would be content to return from the north Atlantic with a 1-0 victory. The Faroes, managed by former Republic of Ireland chief Brian Kerr, have conceded 15 goals already in this Euro 2012 qualifying campaign and are rock bottom of the group without a point.

Northern Ireland could move into second place with a victory, kicking on from Friday’s impressive goalless draw with Italy.

However Worthington fears an almighty test in Toftir and amazingly believes Tuesday’s encounter could be tougher than the Italian job.

Worthy said: “I made a statement in the dressing room on Friday and the lads actually laughed at me. But I said, I’d love to stuff the Faroes 1-0.

"If we can come away with three points, and that won’t be easy, then it will be a great result and a fantastic start to the campaign.

“I truly see the game on Tuesday as more difficult than Italy because of the place we are going to and the manager who is in charge.”
