Trial stress killed gran
A loving north Belfast grandmother who was to give evidence at the retrial of a man accused of indecently assaulting her has died from a massive heart attack.
Mary Patterson's family believe the stress brought on by the court battle caused her premature death last weekend.
The 54-year-old Ardoyne woman spent last month giving evidence at the trial of Barry Mooney, 26, who denied indecently assaulting her two years ago.
Mooney was alleged to have entered Mary’s Herbert Street home and performed a sex act on himself in her bedroom. But on the final day of the case the judge ordered a retrial on a point of law.
Mary was told that she would have to come back to court in August.
But the prospect of having to give evidence a second time led to increased stress levels which doctors suspect caused her fatal heart attack last weekend.
