Niall O'Connor was the hero landing six out of nine kicks as Ulster survived a late scare in Viadana.

They defended superbly in the final minutes, surviving the ordeal of protracted video analysis which ruled that Nick Williams had not scored for the hosts in the dying moments.

It was a night of firsts — Aironi’s first ever home match at this level, Ulster’s first Magners League game on Italian soil and Welsh referee David Jones’s debut in the competition.
