Joyce turns on style to help the Lightning retain title

By Ian Callender

It was the Ed Joyce show at Clontarf yesterday as Ireland’s classiest batsman hit his highest score of the season to ensure Leinster Lightning retained the Interprovincial Championship.

The holders needed to score only 250 in their first innings against Northern Knights to put them out of sight at the top of the table, and Joyce scored 167 of them himself in the most pleasing way imaginable.

When skipper John Anderson declared on 383 for eight — the fourth highest total in the competition and the highest in Dublin — Joyce had batted throughout the innings, which lasted for 367 minutes, faced 246 balls and hit 24 fours and a six.

It was his 47th first-class century and the second time he had passed 150 this season. He shared partnerships of 144 with Sean Terry and, crucially in their efforts to win the game, 138 for the eighth wicket with Tyrone Kane, both of whom posted their best first-class scores.

Kane actually doubled his previous best with clean hitting which yielded two sixes, while two of Terry’s 12 boundaries also cleared the rope.

It left the Knights requiring 188 to avoid the innings defeat, and by the close last night half the side were back in the pavilion with just 72 runs on the board.

Two bowlers were on a hat-trick yesterday — Shane Getkate twice, after Lorcan Tucker and Eddie Richardson were out for golden ducks, and George Dockrell after dismissing nightwatchman Nathan Smith and John Matchett, both leg before, bringing the tally of lbws to eight in the match.

James Shannon, the Knights’ best batsman, is still there to resume this morning, but with Clontarf tearaway David Delany steaming in against the tail, the NCU side will do well to take the game beyond lunchtime today.
