Fermanagh’s fightback falls short as Limerick win promotion
Limerick secured promotion to Division Two for 2023 as they saw off Fermanagh at the Gaelic Grounds. Josh Ryan’s goal separated the sides at half-time and although Fermanagh closed the gap back to a single point early in the second period, the home side regained the upper hand and pushed on for the victory. Fermanagh had started the brighter of the sides with Ciaran Corrigan landing the opening score and by the sixth minute they led 0-3 to 0-1. However, Limerick began to get on top with Ryan, Hugh Bourke and James Naughton firing over. Indeed, the game appeared to be running away from Fermanagh when Limerick found the net in the 24th minute. Good work from midfielder Cillian Fahy saw him feed the ball across goal where Ryan was on hand to palm home to make it 1-7 to 0-5. Fermanagh though had the better of things over the final 10 minutes of the half as Darragh McGurn, Gary McKenna and Ryan Lyons making it eight different point scorers for the Ernemen. Conall Jones and Corrigan knocked over points to make it 1-08 to 0-10 before Cian Sheehan and McGurn traded points as the game remained in the balance. However, the impressive Ryan fired over two fine scores and Fahy also landed from distance as Limerick pushed four clear. Fermanagh did continue to battle and McGurn and Brandon Horan lofted over points, but with substitutes Robbie Bourke and Tommy Griffin replying for Limerick they ran out five-point victors.
