Moyvalley Hotel: Luxurious accommodation in the heart of the country

By Joanne Sweeney

A driver could easily pass the Moyvalley Hotel and golf resort which can be found in the northern part of Co Kildare.

Apart from the roadside sign in this quiet part of the countryside, you could easily miss its long, sweeping driveway unless you know beforehand what you might find.

That would be a great pity for what you find at the end of the road after fields of hay bales on both sides is a world that is dedicated to peace and relaxation amidst some of the most natural countryside you’ll find anywhere on the island of Ireland.

There’s 200 hectares of countryside surrounding the resort and visitors get the feeling that they are literally lords and ladies of their own estate.

Moyvalley is simply luxurious accommodation in the heart of the country at its very best.

The hotel’s original Balyna House is a 19th Italianate mansion which has been lovingly restored to its original splendour with 10 lavishly decorated bedrooms and reception rooms.

It sits proudly aside of a purpose built resort boutique hotel with its 54 bedrooms with its usual accompaniment of bars and restaurants and conference facilities.

For those who prefer to do their own thing, there are 13 self-catering cottages to sleep six people  surround a quiet courtyard.

However, self-catering gives the wrong impression of these cottages as they are furnished in the same lavish style as the main hotel and possibly the mansion house.

The ‘cottage’ boosts a full working kitchen, large living room with open fire and rich soft furnishings. Upstairs the two traditionally furnished bedrooms come with large ensuite bathrooms with Jacuzzi baths and showers.

Combined with a flurry bathrobe and complimentary slippers, self-catering guests do not miss out on the feeling of being well looked after at Moyvalley.

And if that is not enough, all of this comes with a bit of golf.

For those who love the sport, that does a disservice to the Darren Clarke designed 18 hole inland links course that forms the centrepiece of the Moyvalley golf club and resort.

Moyvalley Golf Club boasts some of the best practice facilities in Ireland including a driving range with both outdoor and covered driving bays, a short game academy which includes two large chipping greens, three large bunkers and a  large practice putting green, all of which are built to a USGA specification.

Designed to fairly challenge all levels of golfers from beginners to seasonal professionals, the course is flushed out with large greens, lakes and bunkers.

The modern and luxuriously appointed clubhouse boasts extensive locker room facilities together with a spacious bar and restaurant offering panoramic views of the course and estate.

Rates for golf green fees are €20 (14.50) for all hotel residents or €35 (£25) for non-resident.

Cottages are from €165 (£120) for two adults & two children to €220 (£160) for four adults sharing. This includes full Irish breakfast. For further information
