Video: A 12-year-old Rory McIlroy ‘was a star in the making’ during his time at the Darren Clarke Foundation

The world's current No 1 golfer - Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy - owes some gratitude to his fellow countryman - the 2011 British Open winner Darren Clarke.

Dougie Heather, the CEO of the Darren Clarke Foundation - which raises funds for cancer research while promoting golf with young people - said that a young Rory came through the ranks of the DCF, as did many other promising young golfers.

"I remember Rory was playing off one of the longest tees in Ireland, and he asked me if he could tee-off at the back tees.

"Even then, at 12 years of age, you could tell he was a star in the making."
