Video: Australian scientists discover Antarctic ice secrets

Australian and New Zealand scientists have discovered that freak waves up to three meters can shatter polar ice hundreds of miles from the edge of the ice pack. National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research researchers used buoys to monitor the waves during storms in the Southern Ocean. This video shows the buoys being deployed from the Australian Antarctic Division’s icebreaker Aurora Australis. Credit:
